STAR Vocabulary Practice Test Grade 9: Test Prep Reading / Literacy High School
I have found that approximately ⅓ of the STAR reading diagnostic assessment is vocabulary, and I have compiled a separate list of 60+ vocab. words that appear frequently for my 9th grade students.
The vocabulary questions provided here resemble the types of questions 9th-grade students will encounter on the STAR reading diagnostic and progress monitoring assessments.
Some challenging vocabulary words can be understood through context clues, and this is a skill that I consistently model and practice with my students. However, several passages in the STAR assessments lack context clues, making it difficult for students to decipher the meanings of words solely through context. Examples of these types of questions are included in this resource. In such cases, students are often required to utilize the process of elimination, narrowing down the options and selecting the word that seems most fitting.
It's frustrating that so many vocabulary questions on STAR don’t lend themselves to the strategy of utilizing context clues, and the only recourse is to familiarize students with a broad range of vocabulary, teach them to recognize root words, and encourage them to rely heavily on the process of elimination when all else fails.
The 60+ questions included here are designed by STAR, and as of spring 2024 they have appeared repeatedly on the reading diagnostic for 9th grade students.
