Looking for an inspirational mini-lesson lesson to keep your secondary students engaged?

Have them watch Jack Canfield's 60 minute You Tube video called The Secret to Success (link also included on handout), which focuses on the importance of short and long term goals. Then have them answer the comprehension questions included here, which I've designed to prompt thoughtful introspection on the principles Canfield shares.

Students will be engaged for two 70- 90 minute periods, and most importantly, they will be inspired and learn something new that will genuinely benefit them.

Appropriate for grades 8-12.

Content Objective (WHAT?)—based on standards/essential learnings: 
students will analyze ideas & propel conversations to clarify, verify, or challenge ideas (birdseed) 
students will apply understanding of daily quote to own lives (birdseed journal reflection) 
Students will demonstrate command of conventions including correct use of commas, periods, apostrophes, semicolons, and capitalization 
Students will examine ideas presented in text (video) and demonstrate comprehension of concepts 
students will identify and recall ten steps to success as explained in text (video)
students will compare & contrast success-oriented behaviors with their own 
students will differentiate between vague goals and measurable goals 
Content Language Objective (HOW?)—involves 4 language domains: reading-writing-speaking-listening: (all 4 may not necessarily be addressed in one day)
students will contribute to whole group discussion during Birdseed (speaking and listening) 
students will reflect on birdseed and write reflection demonstrating command of conventions (writing)
Students will watch video and collaborate with peers to build comprehension (listening & speaking) 
students will record and describe measurable life goals (writing) 

students will demonstrate comprehension of text by correctly answering prompts related to material (writing)
